Course Description:

Unlock your creative potential through the lens in this inspiring photography course designed for adult learners of moderate to advanced levels. Rather than focusing solely on technical skills, this 6 session workshop emphasizes photography as a powerful form of artistic expression. You’ll explore how to use light, composition and perspective to tell stories, evoke emotion and develop your own visual style. Through guided shooting themes and collaborative critiques, you’ll experiment with a variety of creative approaches—from abstract and conceptual work to documentary and narrative photography. This workshop will help you move beyond snapshots to create meaningful, imaginative images. Throughout the workshop, we’ll also engage with the work of influential and contemporary photographers through photobooks, zines, and online collections. These explorations will serve as both inspiration and critical reference points, helping you understand diverse visual languages and refine your own.

To enrich the students’ learning experience even further

The course also features a special guest presentation by a professional photographer who will share their work, creative processes and real-world insights. Additionally, there will be guests joining the class during two of the six classes to offer fresh feedback on students’ work. This unique didactic exposure opens up discussion on diverse photographic styles and various photography paths, and offered powerful inspiration. Perfect for hobbyists, aspiring artists and curious creatives, this class encourages you to see the world differently—and express what you see in bold, personal ways.

More About the Course Location:

Sugar Mom's Bar was a vibrant speakeasy that operated in this location more than a decade ago. Known for its cavernous subterranean space and lively atmosphere, its tables used to be littered with small plastic toys and lollipops and its walls covered in memories and graffiti that are still visible today. Aptly described in a CBS news Philadelphia report: “Sugar Moms was part carnival, part living room.” Sugar Mom’s ceased operating as a bar in 2013 but it lives on and now serves as the creative nerve center of the future Ministry of Owe (MoA) — a six-story interactive art project being assembled in an old bank building next door by the internationally famed Philadelphia-based multi-media visionary, artist and muralist, Meg Saligman.

Special notes: Sugarmom’s Hideaway is not wheelchair accessible. A staircase leads to the below ground class area (about 20 steps). There is no elevator. Street parking and parking lots available throughout Old City.
